Howard Hughes Medical Institute – Hotel & Conference Center

Ashburn, VA
Owner: Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Architect: Rafael Vinoly Architects PC
Engineer: Flack & Kurtz
Contract Value: $3 Million

Located on the same 281-acre farm in Loudoun County, Virginia, HHMI’s Conference Housing facility imitates the “snake-like” twists and turns of the Landscape Building. The 96 room hotel was designed to give the visiting scientists a home away from home during the many conferences conducted by HHMI.  The Conference Housing facility incorporates a fitness center, a large social gathering area overlooking the pond and an aerobics room to be utilized by the visiting guests, scientists and employees working in the Landscape building next door.

The mechanical system consists of vertical fan coil units located in each guest room and 6 air handling units that supply heating and cooling to the long open corridors, fitness area and two-story social space.  The hot and chilled water to operate the mechanical equipment is supplied by the Landscape building HVAC equipment via a connecting tunnel where the HVAC pipe is routed along the wall on steel supports.

The plumbing system for the Conference Housing Facility consists of over 100 high quality plumbing fixtures.
